Mulcair's definition of victory takes new meaning as NDP Leader - The Globe and Mail

I haven't voted for the NDP since my first vote as an 18 year old and I'm unlikely to change now, but I salute Thomas Mulcair for winning the leadership of that party. Canada had not elected a bearded Prime Minister since the late 1800's. As a furry faced individual myself... I wish him well! ‘Your God’s wrong’: Judge erupts in angry tirade, sends pro-life activist back to jail | LifeSiteNews.com

The charges related to Mary Wagner’s November 8 arrest at the site of the Bloor West Village “Women’s Clinic.” Wagner has been arrested on several occasions for peacefully entering abortion facilities in Toronto, where she presents women in the waiting room with a rose and offers them pro-life counseling.  The remarkable scene played itself out after Crown attorney Derek Ishak and defense counsel Russell Browne made a joint submission to Mr. Justice S. Ford Clements for time served plus a three-year probationary term. But Clements emphatically rejected the submission. “She can sit in jail, if that’s the only way to protect people,” he fulminated, calling Wagner “cowardly” for “abusing other human beings” and not having the courage to make her views known through other channels. “This is an extraordinary waste of resources. Get a grip!” “You don’t get it, do you? What’s the rule of law? You’re required to abide by it … You’ve lost the right as a citize...

Wildrose party to rethink the wheels on Danielle Smith’s campaign bus | News | National Post

Ladies and gentlemen: I offer below my first bit of evidence in making the case that at least when it comes to politics, Canada is to the US what the East Coast Hockey League is to the NHL.  Danielle Smith is the Wildrose Party Leader. Could you see Hilary Clinton or Sarah Palin getting on a similar bus? Not likely. Comments? Wildrose party to rethink the wheels on Danielle Smith’s campaign bus | News | National Post

The blind and toothless: A reflection on forgiveness from Rev. Eric Strachan of Pembroke. Very well stated and appropriate in the face of today's news around the world

As long as you don’t forgive, who and whatever it is will occupy a rent-free space in your mind. – ISABELLE HOLLAND The English novelist C.S. Lewis once put the topic of ‘forgiveness’ into proper perspective: “Everybody says that forgiveness is a lovely idea,” said Lewis, and then he added a postscript, “until they have something to forgive.” How true!  Forgiving those who have wounded us and caused us grievous injury, to quote the well-worn cliche, “is easier ‘said’ than ‘done’.“ Take some current stories that are front and centre of today’s news, put yourself in the picture, and ask the soul-searching question, “In identical circumstances, could I forgive?”  A United States staff-sergeant, gun in hand, enters an Afghan village and goes on a shooting rampage. When the killing spree has ended in the early hours of the morning, the lone stalker has mercilessly mowed down 16 Afghans, including nine children and three women. Hamid Karzai, ...

Another example of the harm done to innocents on Sylvia's Site

Sylvia MacEachern and husband Sadly, once again Sylvia MacEachern of Sylvia's Site has let her passion imperil her judgment as she offers up another priest for battering on her blog. Today's victim: Fr. Tim Scott, csb. What horrible offense does Sylvia use to justify exposing this man to abuse on her site? (evidence of which is posted below) He is the official spokesman for the Basilians. That, and the fact that he taught at the same school as another priest who was convicted of sexual abuse of minors. That's it. Nothing more than that. Because of these two simple facts Sylvia chose to post a column entitled 'Father Tim Scott csb Teaching at St. Mary's College', that generated the following comment today: Sorry I Can't Say says: March 14, 2012 at 3:43 pm Now that just creeps me out!!!! Here was Scott living right alongside Marshall in Crawley Hall while Marshall was abusing kids at night in the very same building and at their shared school. And C...

Larry asks about the 'few bad apples' argument among the good priests who should not be judged by the crimes of the few.

An old friend of this blog and frequent poster on Sylvia's Site, Larry Green asked a salient question on that site a while back. Here was his comment: How is it that so many Catholics ( laity and clergy) can go on and on with the pathetic claim that ” there are only a few bad apples?” “All”of the “good” priests suffer so deeply because of a “few bad apples” they say. Why do those claims appear to be so empty and disgusting? If “all” the “good” priest’s suffering is so terrible because of these “few bad apples”, then why aren’t they doing something about it? Why don’t we hear them standing up and demanding justice for victims and changes to take place immediately? Why is it that all we here from “all” the “good” priests is that we shouldn’t be making hasty judgments about accused? Why is it all we seem to hear from” all” the “good” priests that they will hire lawyers and sue anyone who speaks out and voices there anger and disgust with these predators ( pedophiles ...

I wish I could have said this as well as 'Glen' posted on Sylvia's Site

Regulars here will know that I have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with Sylvia McEachern of ' Sylvia's Site ', a blog dedicated to the abuse scandals in the Catholic Church.   I believe that she can be credited for keeping the Bishop's feet to the fire and ensuring that they follow their promised protocols and policies, as well as for her standing with and beside victims who must endure re-victimization by the process as their accusations wind their way through the criminal and civil justice systems.  On the other hand, she has recently let her zeal for the cause blind her to her obligations to justice as evidenced by her unjustly calumniating an East Coast Bishop as I wrote about in a recent National Post digital edition .  Ultimately I was banned from posting comments on her site as I would not be silent in the face of her calumny. Providentially, others have stepped up to continue my essential challenge of calling Sylvia to return to her heretofore a...

The Reason for Our Hope: Jesus Christ: Meaning for Humanity

T he latest from my former Bishop, now Archbishop Richard Smith (Edmonton). His writing style is accessible and his logic and theology is clear and concise. I was blessed to have him as my Ordinary. I always found his homilies and writings to nourishing for mind and soul. This one is no different. The Reason for Our Hope: Jesus Christ: Meaning for Humanity

Here I Stand And Insult, I Can Do No Other | The American Catholic

Here's a little something for some of the recent posters here. Maybe they can improve their comments as a result! I sometimes find it tiresome to get up early in the morning to review comments that pretend to be intelligent when in fact they are little more than empty prejudice and hateful invective poorly presented. I can always hope this might inspire at least a few of them to try to do better. Here I Stand And Insult, I Can Do No Other | The American Catholic

The New Yorker front cover: Rick Santorum in a dog house on the roof of Mitt Romney's car - POLITICO.com

As a Canadian, I don't have much invested on whomever the Republican's nominate as Obama will make mincemeat out of any of the current candidates for that position in the coming general election. But this cartoon cover is just too good not to share. It certainly will bring a chuckle to the heart of anyone familiar with the Romney family's roadtrip vacations from years past. His gaffe was as memorable as any he's committed in this primary run. It's easily the match to Michigan's perfect trees and his self disclosure that he and his wife are a four luxury vehicle couple this time around. Allentown Bishop Edward Cullen was a witness to order to destroy list of Philadelphia priests suspected of abuse. - mcall.com

As devastating as this news in for the Church - it is a fate we have brought upon ourselves. Again it demonstrates that some within the chain of command of the Church have failed to follow stated policy of reporting abuse allegations and transparency in its legal dealings.
