Catholic Church needs total reform - Eureka Street

An interesting perspective from an unexpected source! An Australian Roman Catholic Bishop calls for a sweeping review of the structures and cultures of the Church to eliminate the distortion of practice caused by an abuse of power.

  1. Much of what he says makes some sense. The Catholic Church is always in need of reform... it's a bit of a truism. However the notion that the Catholic Church can and ought to conform with contemporary progress, liberalism, and civilization is a bit suspect. Indeed, the Church is called to stand in opposition to the culture, not slavishly following it.

Let us not forget whose Church it is. It might be more useful to remake the Church in his image instead of our own.

Moreover, many of the reforms the bishop proposes have already been adopted in other churches. It might be useful to look at them.

But...if, as you claim, you are made "in his image," then is not his image the same as your own?

All good things must come to an end

Well, it's been a hell of a ride, laying rubber all over the road for the past decade. But it's time to call it a day and park the Rogue in the garage. Effective today, I am shutting down my blog to focus my attention on other endeavours. My thanks to the more than 2.7 million people who regularly joined me on these sojourns through news stories over the years that dealt with the places with issues of religion and faith intersecting with public affairs. May God bless you with a continuing desire to learn about and help disseminate the issues of faith throughout the public square. Happy trails in your continuing travels! Fr. Tim Moyle, p.p.
