Fr. John Corapi's (The Black Sheep Dog) community "SOLT" issues a public statement

It seems (as always) that there are two sides to every story. The 'Black Sheepdog has told his side and now his religious community, SOLT has told theirs. Given the harsh talk that Fr. Corapri has hurled their way they have been quite charitable in their response. Now they have decided to reveal the nature of the allegations that have been made against him. It seems that this drama has become for the Catholic blogosphere what the Casey Antony was for the secular media: the gift that keeps on giving. Eternal Word Television Network: Blog - by

Weiner, Vitter and Others' 'Unforgivable' Behavior - NYTimes.com

'Weiner-gate' ? Really? That's what's dominated the news these past few days? Evidently not much happened in the world in my days of isolation far away from all the news and social media (a.k.a. ... paradise) if a congressman 'sexting' and sending close-ups of his loaded briefs is a lead story, at least according to Jon Stewart of the 'Daily Show'. (What a 'joy' it was that the first thing I saw on TV after four days of isolation, prayer and rest was the introduction of his 'C#ck Wheel'. Five minutes of incessant penis humor to satirize this current American fixation was all I could take before turning off the TV and diving into another book!)  The end of the world is surely not too far off if the dominant culture and government in the world can be preoccupied with such puerile 'news'. It seems that whenever a politician moves 'below the belt line' they captures the American public's attention (or at least their med...

Probability Theory

COOL! A stimulating and amazing presentation of a common logical fallacy that most seem oblivious to: " If A... then B" is not the same as saying "If B... then A ". Chances Are - Opinionator Blog - NYTimes.com

Sex Abuse Scandal touches Vatican itself

There has been a great deal of coverage of a recent scandal that has erupted within the lay staff of the Vatican. It is alleged that a member of the Vatican Choir, Thomas Chinedu Ehiem, age 29 and Angelo Balducci, a Papal Gentiluomini (“Gentleman” usher who helps greet dignitaries), have been recorded discussing the procurement of gay sexual partners for Balducci, a married man. LifeSiteNews posts in its report a concern that this might be only the first of what will become all too common within the Vatican walls, now that its practiced walls of silence have been breached. "American priest and frequent media commentator, Father Thomas Williams told CBS News, "We're just scratching the surface here. There's definitely more to come"." “'We only know of these two men connected with the Vatican in some way, but obviously, they are talking about a ring, and a ring means definitely more people involved." Given the experiences of North American, Ir...

Bishop Paul-Andre Durocher addresses the Lahey Scandal

In the editorial section of Cornwall’s Standard Freeholder the following Letter to the editor was written by Bishop Paul-André Durocher on October 2, 2009. In the letter he expresses his shock and shame, bewilderment, and sorrow. “My heart goes out to all those who have been deeply shaken by this revelation. My prayers are offered for all of us.” Here is his full letter: Shocked By Charges Against Fellow Bishop: I imagine most readers of this newspaper have been shocked and scandalized at the news that a Canadian bishop has been charged with possession of child pornography. I share their shock, I also feel a great sense of shame that a fellow bishop could have been involved in such a horrible activity. The seriousness of the charge and the immediate resignation of the accused shakes our confidence in his presumed innocence. It also undermines our trust in all persons in positions of authority, including those who, like Bishop Lahey, have used their authority positively to heal breach...

A Letter to the Bishops of Canada

The following letter was sent to each of the Bishops of Canada. Your comments are welcome. ----------------------------------------- Most Holy Excellency, I write to you today as a faithful priest in good standing of the Diocese of Pembroke to ask of you two things. First I wish to bring to your attention a blog that I have begun which I have entitled, "Where the Rubber Hits the Road" which is dedicated to confronting directly many of the major issues of the day that have beset our Church in the wake of the recent sex abuse scandals which have erupted and whose effects are even now being counted in untold numbers of souls lost to the Church. I have posted there three essays of my own ("Virtual Scandal", "Je me souviens", and "The Dickwad Theory") as well as any other articles or postings that I can find where a Bishop has addressed this myriad of crisises. The address for the blog is: http://frtimmoyle.blogspot.com/ Secondly, and more import...

Bishop Frederick Henry (Calgary) addresses the Lahey Scandal

Comments re the Arrest of Bishop Lahey My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On September 30th, at the Eucharist, we read from the Book of Nehemiah and I preached about the expression “sadness of the heart,” a deep profound pain that cannot be adequately expressed in simple language but only by way of an image. Little did I realize how apt that image would be for so many of us when it was announced that Bishop Lahey was charged with the possession and importation of child pornography. Our sadness, pain and anger seem boundless. I had hoped that we had finally rounded the corner on all the abuse situations within the church and on the part of its shepherds. In August, the Diocese of Antigonish reached a multi-million dollar settlement with known and alleged child victims of sexual abuse by priests. Bishop Lahey apologized and noted that they were entitled to protection. He said: “Sexual abuse, indeed, any abuse, is wrong. It is a crime and it is a serious sin in the eyes of God. ...
