Should +Dolan have accepted the invitation to speak at the Democrat's convention?

Over at SoCon or Bust , you can find an article questioning whether or not it's appropriate for Cardinal +Dolan (NY) to address the upcoming DNC convention in Charlotte, NC. He agrees with Dr. Jeff Mirus who says that +Dolan should not ... unless he uses the opportunity to give them hell. I disagree. IMHO +Dolan is IMHO doing exactly the right thing. First, he has been invited to lead the convention in prayer… not speak to them. Prayer must NEVER be done with a political intention other than to fulfill the great commission. It transcends the left/right framework of the American political system and super-imposes the imprint of the heavenly kingdom. It should be something that recognizes that we are all sinners and are all in need repentance and forgiveness. This is the role of prayer. If he were invited to give a speech, he would be obliged to do as his critics suggest. This however is not the case. Secondly, +Dolan espouses a brand of Catholicism which describes as affirmative o...

Church Ladies with Typewriters

Some oldies but some new ones as well in this latest version of bulletin bloopers. My favorites are: "The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility. " and "Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones. Quebec Gestapo Set To Pounce on Homeschooling Family

I've known a number of families who have chosen to Homeschool their children... and the kids did exceptionally well in their adult lives! I appreciate that there are cases where this has not been the case, but the same can be said about some schools I've dealt with over the years.  This is another step along the path of the State intruding into the rights of families and individuals and it should be opposed. I donated to the cause on the Home School Legal Defence Association of Canada website. I hope you might consider doing the same. You'll find the link within the SoCon story. 'Baby Joseph' likely to have surgery within days, hospital says - CNN.com

This case has roiled within the pro-life community in Canada for months now. With Joseph's transfer to an American hospital, the drama shifts south of the border. Click on the link below to read the CNN take on this story. I also recommend this column from 'SoCon or Bust' to understand why it is that this story has been so prominent among the Canadian pro-life advocates. I may not agree with the tone and tenor of SoCon's argument, but the issues he raises are certainly worthy of consideration. 'Baby Joseph' likely to have surgery within days, hospital says - CNN.com

Spiritual Call to arms: Monday OCTOBER 25, 2010 - A Day of Fast & Prayer for Life

Everyone is going to die. Life is a terminal illness. The concern the proponents of euthanasia  are raising deals with the means and conduct of death. If we have the desire and capacity when we are able, we can legally suicide. What they are speaking to is that moment when one no longer has the capacity to effect their own death. This desire to have someone else act as our agent when we approach our end is our fear of pain and profound existential angst.  If a medical coma is as effective as claimed, in as much it can suppress all conscious and unconscious thought, then it would seem to provide the same conclusion sought for with suicide. Why change the law to permit euthanasia when palliative care can provide the same abyss that is desired by those who rush to embrace in death just to alleviate an irrational fear?  This irrationality is all the more ironic coming as it does primarily from those who claim Voltaire's model of reason 'above all else' as their clarion call...

A note from a friend of this blog!!

Father Tim, I just couldn't figure out how to email you at your blog.  I hope this will suffice.  I am trying to get some leverage for a fast/pray initiative this Monday.  Could you please help by mentioning it on your blog?  (besides, the radicals will love to hear that we STILL fast and pray in desperate times!) Thanks so much, Father Tim. Kathie Hogan Parry Sound, Ontario ---------------------------------------------------- John Pacheco (SoCon or Bust) has called for a day of fasting and prayer this Monday.  (and you thought I'd ask you to write a letter!) The Canadian bishops will be talking about Development and Peace at 11:45am on Monday, at their annual plenary session, in Cornwall, Ontario.  Pro-lifers have been waiting a long time to hear the bishops speak definitively on why - 1. Demographic bomb in the heart of Europe

George Weigel has been stating for years (read The Cube & the Cathedral ) that there is a demographic time bomb that is ticking in the heart of Christian Europe, and to a lesser degree in North America. The SoCon Blog has posted an additional article which elucidates this point with up to date statistics. Click here to read this posting. What is the nature of this demographic bomb? It is the high birth rate among adherents of Islam and the sub-replacement birth rate among Christians. If this trend continues for even one generation, most countries of the western world will be on the verge of becoming Muslim states. Maybe the best resolution that Christians could undertake this new year is to propagate!!

If You Look for the Bad In People, You're sure to Find it.

FANTASTIC POST from Michael Brandon at Freedom of Thought Blog!! Thank you Michael! So look for the good in them instead." The title, subtitle and this last sentence are a direct quote from that great paragon of Christian missionary thought, Polyanna, who was actually quoting one A. Lincoln at the time. Polyanna said these words to the reverend, played by Karl Malden. The reverend character was a fire breathing preacher, who under Polyanna's tutelage saw the light. There are days that I am ashamed to be a blogger. Today is one of those days. But, sometimes shame can be useful. I hope that today is one of those days. The other day, I innocently posted a copy of a letter from Bishop Henry that Fr. Tim Moyle of Where the Rubber Hits The Road had reprinted on his blog. What happened after was sickening to me. Catholic Dialogue picked up on it, and then went on a rant about an issue about fatal euthanasia at St. Joseph's Hospital in London, Ontario. John Pache...
