Where the Rubber Hits the Road

I would like to ask the readers of my blog to please keep Sylvia of Sylvia's Site fame in your prayers. Not only is her husband facing some significant medical challenges in the next few days, but she recently fell and broke her arm, injured her leg as well as her foot. Sylvia published a post earlier today on her blog if you are interested in reading the gory details. I do not always agree with some of her positions but I have never doubted the sincerity of her convictions when it comes to working towards the protection of all children within the Catholic Church, as well as helping to rid the church of predatory clergy who abuse them. The work she does on her blog in this regard has been called by some a national treasure and it's hard to disagree with that.  Get well soon Sylvia and Michael. You are in the prayers of many people who appreciate your good work.

Here is a comment offered today from a regular on 'Sylvia's Site' in response to her publication of a victim's impact statement registered as part of a civil action taken against a Diocese based upon an allegation made after the clerics death. He notes in the middle of the document a point in which I doubt he understands just how right he is. First, here's the comment: "It is mind boggling!…it goes on and on and on… Every time I think we all have a part of us that is secretly wishing for the abuse to stop or to finally discover this is all in the past…wishing, hoping, praying!…whatever maintains our sanity in the face of this Evil!… Sadly upon reading this legal document, I am left wondering how many copies could be made with just a few changes to the names…for all the victims of this clergy abuse, this institutional sacrilege… Conservatively?…disturbingly ….a wild guess….100,000…300,000…750,000…copies! …worldwide, over 50-100-200 years…lo...

Evidently Sylvia MacEachern of Sylvia's Site has been writing and publishing for a long time. This is a link to an article she wrote alleging the the Police, Diocese and professionals within the Diocese of Cornwall participated in what she alleges was a giant cover-up. It's interesting to note that after umpteen police investigations and a provincial inquiry failed to substantiate her beliefs that she continues on to make her claims. She seems fixated on the subject, her pre-Vatican II sensibilities evidently leading her to see complicit Bishops and criminal priests hiding under every rock and behind the shrubbery . Sylvia's Site is the preeminent Canadian site dedicated to the sex abuse scandals within the Catholic Church. She is a faithful and 'faith-filled' woman who loves her Church but detests the manner in which priests have behaved and Bishops have obfuscated the cause of justice for victims who've suffer at the hands of predators. In this recent offering on her blog she shares some correspondence that a friend of the blog sent to the Irish Prime Minister and the Archbishop of Dublin, congratulating both for their courageous voices raised in defense of Irish children. Yesterday, a letter was published on a website (Sylvia's Site) that was received anonymously, claiming to come from priests of my diocese writing under the pseudonym of 'Pembroke Priests for Justice, Truth and Integrity'. I have been asked on that site whether or not I would publish the letter here on my blog. The answer is an emphatic NO !!! The reason that I won't publish it is BECAUSE it is anonymously offered. Anyone who follows my blog here or elsewhere on the net should know that I always use my real name (not some made up 'handle') when I express an opinion. I do this because IMHO, if I am not willing to attach my name to an opinion, then I should have no reason to expect that anyone would give it more than just a passing glance. If someone is not willing to stand behind what they write, be they allegations or plaudits, then there is really no reason to give it much attention.
