“Hey Darkside, Get Off the Car.” What a State Farm Commericial Has to Say About God and Spirituality | Archdiocese of Washington

I like this column from Msgr. Charles Pope of the Washington DC Diocese. I've often remarked that God continues to speak to us in many ways, continually calling us to live better lives and remind us of his gifts to us. The fact that Msgr. Pope was able to see this ad as such a communication speaks well to his 'spiritual radar'! After all... our faith is the best 'insurance' any of us can have as we face the bumps and scrapes of our daily lives. It's a natural analogy. Well done Msgr. “I’m So Busy, I Met Myself Coming Back!” A Quick Reflection on the Week of A Priest | Archdiocese of Washington

Looks like a busy classmate from my diocese This most recent column by Msgr. Charles Pope explains perfectly why I enjoy my cottage so much... especially during this summer season. Even though this was to be a week off for me during which I was to entertain a dear friend and classmate, Fr. Paul Conway (Sault Ste. Today we each depart. He begins his return to his parish in Elliot Lake, Ontario (where he's expected back for work on Monday). I'm heading straight back to Mattawa to take care of a wedding rehearsal tonight as well as the weekend celebrations. As we say amongst ourselves, "No use complaining. That's why we get paid the big bucks!" (grin) “I’m So Busy, I Met Mys...

On the Slow, Steady and Subtle Erosion of Religious Liberty | Archdiocese of Washington

Some years ago I read a humorous but poignant story about public prayer at a school graduation. It took place during the time when tide had just begun to turn against religious displays etc. in the public square, somewhere in the late 1980s. Up until that time prayer by a local minister, priest or rabbi was part of graduation, almost without exception. We certainly had it at my public high school graduation in 1979. But by the early 1980s the ACLU and other organizations began to insist that prayer of any sort at a public gathering was wrong and violated the (so-called) “separation of Church and State,” (a phrase that does NOT occur in the US Constitution).  And here is where the story picks up: The class valedictorian of a local Virginia high school (I forget which) was a committed Christian, and also something of a class clown. He was told that, under no circumstances was he to invite his classmates to pray or to mention God in a prayerful way and that, if he ...
