Ontario's Education Minister goes one step too far

Ontario's embattled Minister of Education, Laurel Broten Laurel Broten, the Education Minister of Ontario,  — a professing Catholic who sends her children to Catholic schools — declared October 10th that the province’s publicly funded Catholic schools may not teach students that abortion is wrong because such teaching amounts to “misogyny,” which is prohibited in schools under a controversial anti-bullying law. “Taking away a woman’s right to choose could arguably be considered one of the most misogynistic actions that one could take,”  Broten said during a press conference. “Bill 13,” (The Accepting Schools Act) she asserted, “is about tackling misogyny.” Passed in June, Bill 13 was formulated in response to a series of teen suicides by students who were victims of bullying from their peers. It requires schools to provide “a positive school climate that is inclusive and accepting, regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, se...

Why we march for life - Guest Voices - The Washington Post

"An unborn baby’s heart begins beating 18 days after conception – a tiny heartbeat, a human heartbeat, and a vulnerable one. In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade made it legal to kill unborn human beings at any stage of development, at any time before birth, in all 50 states." I appreciate that this is an American story, but the arguments it presents are equally valid in Canada too. It expresses as well what fires the passion of pro-life advocates world wide. Is a Santorum Surprise in Iowa About to Upset the 2012 Republican Primary? - Politics & Policy - Catholic Online

I appreciate this story is about the American election, but its message applies to Canada as well in as much as we too are plagued with politicians who espouse one set of values when the campaign but fail to live up them once elected. I happen to agree with Mr. Santorum's values because they are Catholic values. I appreciate his openly professing them faithfully. It is refreshing in these troubled times. However I have no idea whatsoever whether or not he'd make a good president and am not taking a position on an election in another country. But it is unique to see a politician on either side of the border so forcefully and completely present the Catholic proposition in an election campaign. Santorum is doing exactly what the Church asks the laity to do... to live out their lives as a only then can uniquely do. He is BEING a Roman Catholic Christian in running for President. He is not just a person running for President who happens to be Catholic and Christian. It's hard...

New head of Canada’s bishops: Abortion is ‘the most outrageous injustice today’ | LifeSiteNews.com

My former boss, +Richard Smith (Edmonton) is interviewed in the wake of his election as President of the CCCB (Canadian Bishops Conference). In it, he speaks of the life agenda as the most immediate and pressing issue for Catholics to confront today. I couldn't agree more. We were incredibly fortunate to have been under his leadership in our Pembroke Diocese from 2002 - 2007. To use a modern secular analogy, we were his 'practice diocese' where he learned the lessons of his craft and ministry among Canada's friendliest people, the folks of the Ottawa Valley. FANTASTIC PRO-LIFE PHOTO... Best I've EVER seen!

Our First footstep on this earth....we walked with our mother in her womb. CLEARLY... it is a LIFE that presses its tiny feet against a thin wall separating it from being a 'person' under the law. It's a life... not a choice!  While I respect the views of others whose convictions are currently reflected in law, I reserve and claim the right to CRY long and loud, to plead, argue and convince others that it is a human baby who is puting his footprint into the cement of the right to life.  A debate with passion and sound argument that resists becoming 'argumentative'; one that gives no corner but throws no elbows; an airing of the arguments as each side pleads their case in the court of public opinion, before courts and the legislatures of this great and just nation. The debate should not be avoided out of some Canadian sense of social propriety... avoiding conflict with our neighbor by refraining for talking about money, faith or politics. After all, as Canu...

Socon or Bust » Blog Archive » Sign the Petition to the CBC Ombudsman. Demand A Correction!

CTV, Global, National Post... virtually every other report states that the crowd was between 10,000 and 15,000. Yet once again these numbers are massively under-reported by the CBC. I find it amazing that 15-20 people gathering in front of a Church to protest gets substantial coverage on the public airwaves but something that ranks among the largest turnout each year on the Hill is misreported with numbers scaled back by a factor of 50-75%! It's not paranoia if the facts back you up! Again the government broadcaster has manipulated the truth to minimize a growing and youthful challenge to government policy. We used to scream long and loud when state media distorts the truth in other countries. (Remember Pravda?) Why are these same voices that were demanding truth in journalism not demanding a change in the CBC's report to reflect the true size of the demonstration. Please take a moment and add your name to the online petition . Socon or Bust » Blog Archive » Sign the Pet...

Canadian Paediatric approves the dehydration of infants who may not be otherwise dying | LifeSiteNews.com

Gee... at least the Spartans were charitable enough to kill defective infants quickly. Somehow killing kids by starving them of food and water is supposed to be an advancement in our 'civilization'? VERY, VERY, SAD comment on our society today. Kill them in the womb... starve them after birth. It seems that the challenges facing the most innocent among us are more dangerous than for the men and women who take up arms in our defense. This is not progress. We are regressing back to some of our more base activities from millennial ages past. Canadian Paediatric approves the dehydration of infants who may not be otherwise dying | LifeSiteNews.com

Proposed Italian law bans starvation and dehydration of terminal patients | LifeSiteNews.com

Now, if only we could have such a policy in Canada! I find myself complaining often to hospitals when I see patients being denied the basics of food and hydration in the terminal phase of their illness. Food and water should NEVER be considered extraordinary means of care no matter how close (or far) death appears to be. Even Catholic hospitals (such as our hospital here in Mattawa) use this horrid practice, despite the fact that the Church forbids it. Pro-lifers should recognize that this is happening and work to eliminate its use in Canada. Proposed Italian law bans starvation and dehydration of terminal patients | LifeSiteNews.com

'Baby Joseph' likely to have surgery within days, hospital says - CNN.com

This case has roiled within the pro-life community in Canada for months now. With Joseph's transfer to an American hospital, the drama shifts south of the border. Click on the link below to read the CNN take on this story. I also recommend this column from 'SoCon or Bust' to understand why it is that this story has been so prominent among the Canadian pro-life advocates. I may not agree with the tone and tenor of SoCon's argument, but the issues he raises are certainly worthy of consideration. 'Baby Joseph' likely to have surgery within days, hospital says - CNN.com

Opinion: Abortion statistics show reality of a land without restrictions | Holy Post | National Post

As predicted: abortion has become a preferred method of contraception. Why take a pill and play with your hormone levels? An abortion is the answer for far too many. These statistics are telling us that a time when we are beginning to experience a the negative effects of the emerging demographic failures of the past (too many pensioners - not enough younger workers), over 1/3 of all pregnancies in Ontario are ending in the termination of the unborn. I appreciate than many believe that a woman's right to choose should be completely unrestricted and absolute. I disagree. From my perspective, it is an issue of human rights - the right to life of the unborn. Demographic information such as this only adds to the weight of evidence that there have been unintended and negative consequences for society through the maintenance of the holding of 'choice' over 'life', consequences that must be addressed by both sides in these great debates. Someway, somehow we all need t...

Unpleasant Truths « The Gospel in the Digital Age

Here is the 'offensive' billboard ad that NYC officials ordered removed The pro-life/pro-choice debate and the issue of freedom of expression. It seems that speech is 'free' so long as it doesn't argue for the rights of the unborn. Unpleasant Truths « The Gospel in the Digital Age

South Dakota Shelves Bill on Killings in Defense of the Unborn - NYTimes.com

A ham-handed attempt that produced a VERY BAD bill. Everyone, pro-life or pro-choice should be offended by this legislation. Thankfully it will probably never become law, but it does point to some of the stupidity around the abortion issue. Read the article for yourself for the NYT and see what you think.
