Good will to all men? Not from the grumpy atheists! (Thank God not all atheists are grumpy but there sure seems to be a lot of them)
Why is it that so many in the atheist community cannot bring themselves to get past their anger whenever they engage in discussions? The language of many of their contributions in public debate is laced with invective and dripping with sarcasm and bile. There are exceptions of course, but they tend to fall more into the category of being the 'exception that proves the rule' when compared to the hostility of many of today's atheist posters. Comment offered by the theists in the public square is often depicted as being 'malicious' or 'venomous' and intended to enslave the 'feeble minded and weak' by those who post. Nothing could be further from the truth. Venom is something that is oriented to death. Christians are oriented in a 180 degree different direction. We speak not to the culture of death that grips our world but rather for the culture of life and light which ends with the gift of eternal life. For example, the Catholic Church in its hum...
Interesting situation. Will be interesting to see how it comes out. I don't think anyone will argue that the Catholic teaching authority has lost it's authority over women's reproductive rights and marital divorce. Authority over the practice of elective abortion might be arguable but nobody can argue the fact that Catholic women have abortions at virtually the same rate, for the same reasons and from the same sources as the general population in every country in the World, whether abortion is legal there or not.
ReplyDeleteThe Catholic teaching authority now would like to regain some of it's power by couching the question of whether all employers should offer the same health insurance benefits as one of purely religious liberty. If they are successful, they may be able to unseat incumbent President Barack Obama in the next US general election this coming November. If they are unsuccessful, they will lose much of what moral authority they have left. You can't really blame them. They have to try....and are bound to continue to lose moral authority anyway.
I do not care for the Catholic clerical leadership and do not agree with virtually any of their current goals to re evangelize the church along reactionary, traditionalist lines. Still, I understand why they believe they must act as they do.
