Proof positive that the CBC has no idea how the Catholic Church is structured as they claim that these documents 'prove' that the Vatican is indeed responsible for the abuses committed in the Residential Schools.
Yes, some of these documents were indeed sent to Rome, but to the head of the Oblate Order. Just because a church organization has its head office in Rome doesn't mean that it's not independent from the offices of the Vatican! It's like saying that the government in Toronto would be aware of what's happening in a branch of an organization just because it is headquartered in the same city. Just because something is sent to the head of the Oblate order does not mean that members of the hierarchy in the Vatican would be aware of its existence let alone its contents. These documents do not prove what the author of this article seems to think it does.

But the Catholic Church has apologized in the past for the actions of its clergy whether they are diocesan or religious. Because the dioceses and religious orders are separate corporate entities this gives them legal (in civil law) and financial cover but not moral cover.
