Pope calls on global leaders to abolish death penalty, provide healthcare, forgive debt | National Catholic Reporter

  1. From a quick glance at the comments on NCR it's not that popular among Catholics, at least of the American variety. Too bad.

    1. Michael: The NCR is definitely not popular with big 'C' conservative Catholics on either side of the border. Too bad really since they sometimes have some excellent articles worth reading. I can never understand the logic of closing oneself off to an entire swatch of media just because one doesn't agree with their politics. One should cast as wide an eye as possible even if only to learn what 'the enemy' is up to! That's something that St. JPII taught and practiced - but it didn't seem to take root with the ultra CATHOLIC ORTHODOX crowd.

    2. I agree about the media. I read The Economist cover to cover each week partly to challenge my viewpoint on issues. The other part is because it is so well written and there are not too many publications today where that can be said.

I hope this pope manages to sway some of these "ultra Catholic orthodox" cafeteria Catholics.

Sisters of Life

Here is an excellent website for any and all interested in the pro-life cause. The Sisters of Life are a religious order than began in New York City under the authority of Cardinal Jon O'Connor (RIP) in the 1980's. Their traditional religious lifestyle and clear charism have led them to grow much faster than many other orders. As a result, these wonderful women are moving beyond the boundaries of NYC and have opened a convent in Toronto. Here is a link to a news account from LifesiteNews which explains in greater detail their history and mission in Toronto. The Sisters of Life count among their numbers a woman from our Parish here in Mattawa who is soon to take her final profession. This is one of the greatest blessings that we have received as a parish. Anytime a religious vocation comes forward from a parish community, many graces flow back to the local church. I can only pray that as the Sisters of Life establish their ministry in Canada that more and more women will join
