  1. A few points - The US has a constitution that requires the state to neither promote or inhibit any religion. Unless the state allowed every religious denomination to take part (my guess would be thousands in New York) it would be favouring a selected subset. Secondly the mayor did not prevent religious leaders from holding their own commemorations in their own buildings.
    Lastly, why do Christian view finding a twisted cross symbolic? If they had have found steel girders like a crescent moon, would they have said, "all praise to Allah". No it would have reminded them who was behind the attack. Why treat a cross differently?
