If a student wore a shirt in a public school that said "Life is wasted following Jesus", I would be the first to complain. Public schools need to be non threatening, non judgmental and considerate of other people's beliefs or lack of beliefs.

That shirt was confrontational. It was saying that any Jew, Muslim, Buddhist or atheist going to that school is leading a wasted life andthat is inappropriate. We do not want religious wars springing up in schools over religious name calling.

Whether the shirt is confrontational, which I agree it is, has no bearing on whether he should be allowed to wear it, he should be.

That said, the shirt merely panders to the beliefs of the wearer and fellow travelers. Most Christians, who have more ecumenical and inclusive views of the World and the people in it, will be sickened by these sentiments and those who are non Christians will be left with the idea that at least some Christians are cretinous thugs.

Do you like this shirt, Tim? Are you a cretinous thug?

    2. Anonymous: A 'cretinous thug'? Not to best of my knowledge. I am a sinner, (just like you) but I'm quite certain that your description doesn't apply to me.

Just curious. Had this boy been wearing the atheists popular flying spaghetti monster on his shirt with the ridicule and mockery that usually accompanies it, should he be kicked out of school too?

If it claimed that people's lives were a waste I would agree. If it lampooned religion, then that's okay. People have rights, ideas and religions don't.

IF the whole point of booting this kid from school was that his shirt offended someone, I can assure you when some jerk atheist wears a shirt ridiculing my God equating him to a make believe ball of spaghetti, its equally offensive. I'm also not aware of what right the T-shirt violated? Could you be more specific. Do we have a right not to be offended I haven't heard about?

It's not that the shirt offended someone, lots of clothing offends me and it should not get people banned. It's that it denigrated groups of people by saying their life is a waste. You decry T-Shirt depictions of the FSM (may his noodley appendages bless and keep us), yet to may Protestants and non Christians the Catholic assertion that a communion wafer is God is offensive to them.

If this student wore a t-Shirt that said "Life with Jesus is wonderful", it might offend some people, but it wouldn't put people down but since he effectively said people who don't agree with me live wasted lives that is unacceptable.

One also wonders about his mindset and the mindset of the people who taught him that to affirm his beliefs it is necessary to disparage others. That is perhaps the "take away" of this entire incident.
