  1. Great article especially written by an 81 year old. Acceptance of gay marriage is generally a generational issue (even independent of religion). Young people accept it because they know gays and gay couples and it's hard to condemn friends. Older people like myself grew up not knowing anyone who was openly gay and therefore it was easierto condemn the lifestyle. Like Ms Durkin, I'm glad I've changed my opinion.

  2. I dunno, Michael. I'm "old." My parents were even older (yeah, tongue firmly in cheek, there ;D). None of us ever had any problem with homosexuality, even when it was still "illegal." I think it has more to do with one's willingness to accept all differences in others that cause no harm than it has to do with actual sexual squeamishness. People who can think for themselves and form their own opinions independently -- notwithstanding the influences and opinions of their friends, family, and peers -- are usually the ones who have no problems with anyone's "gayness." That doesn't come with age or youth. I wish I knew what it did come with. I'd slap a patent on it so fast... ;D

  3. Acceptance of gays and age is not a 100% correlation but it is a strong one. Religions that maintain the teaching of the immorality of the gay lifestyle risk losing most of the youth; many of whom view discrimination against gays as akin to discrimination against blacks or other groups.

When I was younger I was taught that gays were immoral because of their lifestyle. I'm glad I've abaondoned this opinion and can now judge people by their merits, not by what a religion tells me my opinion should be.
