Henry Karlson writes at InsideCatholic.com on the need of theology to engage with other academic fields to bring to them the wisdom and grace of faith. I found it an interesting article to read in light of my thoughts about the relationship of religious and creative inspiration (see posts about Roy Payne and the comments that are attached to that story).

Theology also needs to be expressed in simple language. I think one of the biggest problems in the Church today, especially amongst bishops, is that all too often the language used to talk about faith is not transparent. People can't understand it.
ReplyDeleteI agree. When clerics (myself included) fall back onto using complex theological language, we need to be reminded that the overwhelming majority of the people we are speaking to have very little catechetical training or formation. It is a challenge to speak the truths of the faith without such terminology. I think that this is even more difficult for Bishops - more people pay attention to what they say, but it is a challenge worth taking up. Thanks for the comment.
