Anything written by Michael Novak is worth reading. I admit to this prejudice up front. Yet even I am impressed by his analysis of the importance of the family unit as a structure that acts as a mediating force between the individual in society and the (often) overwhelming influence of the state. This argument, earlier promoted by Peter Berger and my old friend (of happy memory), Fr. Richard John Neuhaus is explored, pointing out the implication of modern governments social experimentation in redefining the role of this essential (and universal) institution of life.
