On the Problem of False Dichotomies Advanced by those who oppose the Faith. « Archdiocese of Washington

If we are to be successful in this age of the New Evangelization, we need to understand how our opponents work. 'Know thy enemy' is always the first task before engaging in debate just at it is in the art of war. To that end, here's something from Msgr. Charles Pope with something to consider as part of our preparations for our part in the task of re-evangelization.

  1. The need to maintain the existence of hell (as it’s obviously mentioned in Scripture) and a loving God generally, it's argued, is explained by free will.

“For in fact love requires Hell since love first requires freedom.” But then it raises the questions "Do we have freedom in heaven? Do we have free will in heaven? Can we, like Satan, be thrown down to hell for disobedience or do only angels have free will in heaven but we will not?" Then why couldn’t “on earth, as it is in heaven” apply to this vale of tears rather than just the hereafter?
