Well, it's been a hell of a ride, laying rubber all over the road for the past decade. But it's time to call it a day and park the Rogue in the garage. Effective today, I am shutting down my blog to focus my attention on other endeavours. My thanks to the more than 2.7 million people who regularly joined me on these sojourns through news stories over the years that dealt with the places with issues of religion and faith intersecting with public affairs. Judging from Bishop Fellay’s comments, the SSPX will not be reconciled with the Catholic Church in any foreseeable future.
ReplyDeleteThey are currently in a kind of ecclesiastical limbo, neither fully part of the Church nor formally excommunicated. Given that reconciliation is not in the offing, there are two possibilities: either they will ordain more bishops in order to perpetuate the group (an act that would incur automatic excommunication), or the movement will die out.
Totally agree. It's degrading for Catholics to be associated with an organization with a leader in that organization, Richard Williamson, who is a holocaust denier.
ReplyDeleteRationalist: Williamson was ejected from the SSPX a few months ago. It was shortly before they rejected the Vatican's offered path to reconciliation with the Church. He proved to be too nuts, even for them!

During a 2-hour conference given in Ontario, Canada on December 28th, 2012, Bishop Bernard Fellay, Superior General of the Society St. Pius X, commented on the relations between the Holy See and the SSPX during the last two years.
During the conference Bishop Fellay stated “Who, during that time, was the most opposed that the Church would recognize the Society? The enemies of the Church. The Jews, the Masons, the Modernists…”
The word "enemies" used here by Bishop Fellay is of course a religious concept and refers to any group or religious sect which opposes the mission of the Catholic Church and her efforts to fulfill it: the salvation of souls.
This religious context is based upon the words of Our Lord Jesus Christ as recorded in the Holy Gospels: “He that is not with me, is against me: and he that gathereth not with me, scattereth.” (Matthew 12:30)
By referring to the Jews, Bishop Fellay's comment was aimed at the leaders of Jewish organizations, and not the Jewish people, as is being implied by journalists.
Accordingly the Society of St. Pius X denounces the repeated false accusations of anti-Semitism or hate speech made in an attempt to silence its message.
Catholic Mission: I accidentally deleted your comment about Vatican II and other religions. If you can resubmit it, I'll publish it even though I don't agree with your interpretation of the Church's position.
