Reflections from the pastoral ministry of an Evangelical Catholic Priest.
"'It’s true that the church doesn’t have a First Amendment right to have a government contract,' he said, 'but it does have a First Amendment right not to be excluded from a contract based on its religious beliefs.'"
ReplyDeleteLet's extend that, shall we? Does it have a right to make decisions on behalf of its employees who may not share that religious belief? The law will state that it must make the provisions available. It does not say that every employee must take advantage of that provision!

ReplyDeleteIt's instructive to read the readers' comments (especially the readers' picks) to see the tone of the readership of the NYT (yes a liberal paper) as overwhelmingly against the bishops.
Sign of the Times, one could say

“In the name of tolerance, we’re not being tolerated,” said Bishop Thomas J. Paprocki of the Diocese of Springfield, Ill., a civil and canon lawyer who helped drive the church’s losing battle to retain its state contracts for foster care and adoption services.
ReplyDeleteOut of the mouths of babes. You people really are a sick bunch of puppies.
