Reflections from the pastoral ministry of an Evangelical Catholic Priest.
Hi Tim,
ReplyDeleteAnd yet each of these five ways is fatally flawed and easily refuted.
Christianity is like a big comfy cable knit sweater. It may look good on you, and may be very useful in keeping you warm, but just pull at one stitch and it soon unravels.
If these 5 ways are the best reasons for belief, then no reasonable person should be convinced.
Happy to show you how any of these "ways" is easily unravelled.
Cheers...Martin
I must agree with Martin. Even myself with only a handful of university philosophy, can find serious errors in them.
ReplyDeleteBesides I thought if one could prove God's existence, then faith would be unnecessary and then the triptych of faith, hope and love would be missing a frame and fall over.
Michael
Hi Michael,
ReplyDeleteI too have only a handful of university philosophy courses under my belt. Nevertheless, I would like to take a crack at refuting one of these “5 ways”.
Past experience has taught me however, that deflating one bad argument in favour of god's existence will not dissuade the ardent Christian apologist. They simply dig deeper into their bag of rhetorical tricks and either present a spurious refinement, or they trot out an entirely “new” argument. There is simply no end to the number of bad arguments in favour of god’s existence.
So before I begin, I ask this blog’s readership to indicate the single strongest argument in favour of god’s existence. Is it one of the five ways from the article above, or is it something else entirely?
Here is the challenge: Give me the best rational argument in favour of god’s existence, and I will fairly examine it and point out its flaws, limitations or fallacies (if any).
Cheers…Martin
