It's what happens when there is a state church. They would have no standing against a non Anglican Church in the UK but since the government has a policy of non discrimination against gays and the Anglican Church is a state church they have a point. The same thing happened in Denmark where the Danish parliament controls the state Lutheran Church and the parliment voted, as it their right, to allow gay marriage in the state church.
