The Vatican holds billions in assets. Residential school survivors say the Pope should step up on compensation

WOW! That didn't take very long. The Pope apologizes for the abuses suffered by First Nations children, and the next story out is a demand to open the Vatican wallet to pay cash in compensation. No doubt though, this is a story driven by the legal firms that represent various victims. They are anxious to get their cut of whatever settlements are coming to their clients. Lawyers are always more interested in reconciling their bank accounts than they are with working towards a reconciliation between the Church and Canada's aboriginal population. Sadly though, this proves a point that many bloggers and Church members have predicted: that the purpose of SOME who worked towards obtaining this apology from the Vatican did so more out of financial considerations than for justice for those victimized in the Residential Schools program.

All good things must come to an end

Well, it's been a hell of a ride, laying rubber all over the road for the past decade. But it's time to call it a day and park the Rogue in the garage. Effective today, I am shutting down my blog to focus my attention on other endeavours. My thanks to the more than 2.7 million people who regularly joined me on these sojourns through news stories over the years that dealt with the places with issues of religion and faith intersecting with public affairs. May God bless you with a continuing desire to learn about and help disseminate the issues of faith throughout the public square. Happy trails in your continuing travels! Fr. Tim Moyle, p.p.
